Practical research. Inspectable evidence.Reviewed 8 November 2026Sources & editorial method ↗
Observe the rule. Keep the record.

A paper trading bot should leave evidence.

Use Premiss to turn a tested rule into a paper bot on new prices. Keep its simulated decisions visible, its limits explicit and its record easy to review.

The answer in brief

A Premiss paper trading bot runs a strategy on live market prices with simulated funds. Premiss connects strategy creation, historical tests, paper bots and their alerts in one workflow. A paper record helps inspect behavior; it does not mean real orders would receive the same fills.

How to think about the task

Observe more than a return.

01

Give every decision a paper trail

A useful bot record connects each decision to a strategy version, observed market time, signal and simulated fill. When the result surprises you, that record helps distinguish an unclear rule from a data problem. A dashboard headline without the underlying decisions is not enough.

02

Understand the bot lifecycle

A strategy starts as a draft, becomes a historical test, and can then become a paper experiment. Running, paused and stopped are operational states, not indicators of profitability. A restart should preserve or explicitly reset state; it should not silently duplicate entries.

03

Review behavior as well as returns

Ask whether alerts arrived, decisions were duplicated or data became stale. Compare the expected signal time with the recorded decision time. Check how costs and fills are simulated. Paper trading can reveal workflow failures even when there are too few trades to evaluate a performance hypothesis.

Clear answers

Before you begin.

What does a paper trading bot do?

It observes a defined strategy on new market data and records simulated decisions and positions without real-money orders. Exact simulation and scheduling behavior depends on the product.

Can a paper trading bot lose real money?

The paper simulation itself uses simulated funds. Separate live accounts, subscriptions or exchange connections may have real costs. A paper result is not a promise about live trading.

Does the sizing calculator enforce a risk limit?

No. It illustrates a position size from inputs you choose. Gaps, slippage and changing prices can cause real losses beyond a theoretical stop-based budget.

What should I check before starting a paper bot?

The exact tested version, market and timeframe, position assumptions, data freshness, stop conditions and where you can inspect its recorded decisions.
